Holiday K-Tip Extensions: When to Book and What to Expect Before the Big Day

Every year, around Thanksgiving, my messages fill up with the same request: longer, fuller hair in time for the holidays. Office parties, family photos, New Year’s Eve. K-Tip extensions are a lovely way to get there, because once they are in, you wake up with the hair you want every day, with nothing to clip in or take out.

The one thing K-Tips are not is a last-minute service. There is a consultation first, your hair is ordered to match you, and the install itself takes a few hours. So the secret to holiday K-Tips is simple: plan backwards from your big day. Here is how.

Why holiday K-Tips need a little planning

  • Every install starts with a consultation. It is a separate appointment from install day, so we can plan your length, density and color properly.
  • Your hair is ordered for you. After the consultation, a hair deposit orders hair matched to your color and texture, and it has to arrive before your install.
  • Install day takes 3–5 hours. I work one guest at a time in my private Tampa studio, so there are only so many install days on the calendar before the holidays.

Your holiday K-Tip timeline

  1. Book your consultation as early as you can. We match your color, choose your length and fullness, talk through the right K-Tip package and plan your maintenance. The $30 consultation is credited toward your install. Bring a photo of the look you love and the date of your event.
  2. Order your hair and pick your install date. A non-refundable hair deposit orders your custom hair, and a separate service deposit holds your install appointment. At this point I will give you a realistic date based on when your hair arrives.
  3. Plan color before extensions. If you also want to brighten your blonde or refresh your color for the holidays, tell me at your consultation. We will plan the order of your appointments so your extensions match your finished shade.
  4. Get your K-Tips a little before the big day, not the day before. Give yourself time to get used to washing, brushing and styling them, and to let me know if anything needs a small adjustment before your event.

What to expect on install day

Wash your hair the night before or the morning of your appointment with the shampoo I recommend, and arrive with it completely dry and free of oils or leave-ins. Bonds do not hold properly on hair with any moisture or residue.

In the chair, your hair is sectioned in precise rows and each strand is bonded close to the scalp with a professional heat tool, so the attachments stay hidden under your own hair. Once every strand is in, I cut and style so your natural hair and the extensions blend into one. It is a meticulous process, which is exactly why it looks so natural. If you are new to the method, start with what K-Tip extensions are.

Caring for your K-Tips through the holidays

Holiday season means more styling, later nights and often travel. A few habits keep your bonds secure and your hair soft:

  • Never go to bed with wet hair. Dry your roots and bonds completely after every wash.
  • Sleep with your hair loosely braided or in a soft ponytail so it does not tangle at the bonds.
  • Brush from the ends up with a loop or extension-safe brush, especially after an updo or a night of curls.
  • Use a heat protectant every time you curl or straighten for a party.
  • Traveling? Pack your own sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo, conditioner and brush instead of using hotel products.
  • Go ahead and wear it up. K-Tips sit flat and close to the scalp, so high ponytails and updos still look seamless.

After the holidays

With proper care, K-Tips last about 3–5 months, so a holiday install carries you well into spring. Some clients need a quick tightening visit around the 8-week mark for a few bonds that have loosened, and your next full service is booked at the 3–5 month mark. Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book K-Tips for the holidays?

As early as you can. Your install needs a consultation first and hair ordered to match your color, so start with the consultation. I will give you a realistic install date once your hair is ordered.

Can I get K-Tips on the same day as my consultation?

No. The consultation is a separate appointment. Your hair is ordered after it, and your install is booked once your deposit is in.

How long does a K-Tip install take?

Most K-Tip installs take 3–5 hours, depending on the amount of hair and your package.

Will my K-Tips last through the holidays?

Yes. With proper care, K-Tips last about 3–5 months. Some clients need a short tightening visit around 8 weeks for a few bonds that have loosened.
