Platinum is one of the most requested transformations I see in Tampa, and one of the most misunderstood. Clients often ask two questions first: can I get there in one appointment, and will it wreck my hair? The honest answer to both is that it depends on where your hair is starting. Here is what going platinum really involves, how many sessions to expect, and how to keep it bright and healthy in the Florida sun.

Can you go platinum in one appointment?
Sometimes, but not always. Hair that is naturally light, or already blonde, can often reach platinum in one long appointment. Darker or previously colored hair usually needs to be lightened in stages, spaced a few weeks apart. Going slowly is not about selling more appointments. It is how we keep your hair strong enough to actually hold the color and still feel like hair at the end.
What decides how many sessions you need
- Your natural color. The darker your starting point, the more lightening it takes to reach a clean platinum.
- Your color history. Box dye and dark permanent color are the hardest to lift. Old color often lightens unevenly, which is why it may take extra steps.
- The condition of your hair. Hair that is already dry, heat-damaged or over-processed needs a gentler plan.
- The exact shade you want. A soft, creamy platinum and an icy, almost-white blonde are different goals with different upkeep.
| Where you are starting | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Already blonde, wanting brighter or icier | Often one appointment, finished with a custom toner |
| Natural light brown or dark blonde, no previous color | Often one long appointment, sometimes two |
| Dark brown or black natural hair | Usually a few sessions, spaced weeks apart |
| Box dye or dark color on the hair | Starts with a color correction consultation so we can plan it safely |
What happens at your appointment
If we haven’t worked together before, we start with a new guest color consultation. I look at your hair’s condition and color history and we talk about the shade you want and how much upkeep fits your life. From there, the Platinum Blonde Transformation service includes customized lightening, a toner or gloss to set the exact shade, and a blowout. Toner matters: freshly lightened hair naturally shows yellow, and toning is what turns it into the clean platinum you came in for.
How to keep platinum healthy in Florida
Sun, salt water and pool chlorine are hard on every blonde, and platinum shows it first. A few habits make a big difference:
- Use purple shampoo, but not every wash. Once or twice a week is usually enough to keep yellow away without dulling the color.
- Wet your hair and add a leave-in before the pool or the beach, so it soaks up less chlorine and salt. Rinse right after.
- Cover up in strong sun. A hat on long beach days protects both the color and the ends.
- Protect it from heat. Always use a heat protectant, and turn your hot tools down.
- Add a treatment. An intensive repair treatment at your visits helps lightened hair stay strong and soft.

How often you’ll need upkeep
Platinum shows regrowth sooner than soft, dimensional blonding. As a guide, root color maintenance usually falls every 4–6 weeks, while softer blonding can often stretch to 8–12 weeks. Between lightening visits, a blonde gloss and tone refresh brings back the shine and neutralizes any warmth. We will set your schedule together based on your shade and your lifestyle.
Not sure platinum is for you?
If you love the brightness but not the upkeep, full highlights or balayage can give you a very light result that grows out softer. You can see the options on my blonding and color page and real results in the blonding portfolio. Adding length too? K-Tip extensions can be color-matched to your new blonde.
Frequently asked questions
Will going platinum damage my hair?
Any lightening changes the hair, but with the right plan, a gentle pace and good aftercare, platinum hair can stay soft and healthy. That is why I will sometimes recommend more than one session instead of forcing it in a day.
Can I go platinum if I have box dye?
Often yes, but box dye lifts unevenly, so it needs a careful plan. Book a color correction consultation first so we can look at your hair and map out the steps.
Do I really need a toner?
Yes. Lightening alone usually leaves a yellow or warm tone. Toner is what creates a clean, even platinum, and refreshing it between appointments keeps the color looking new.
How much does going platinum cost?
It depends on your starting point, length and density, and how many sessions you need. You can see the current starting price for the Platinum Blonde Transformation on my Vagaro menu, and we confirm everything at your consultation.
